Context
The context in which the Digital Technology District is located is characterised by a high number of companies operating in the ICT sector, by research actions in the ICT field conducted by the Faculty of Sciences MM.FF.NN. of the University of Udine and by a high number of projects carried out by Friuli Innovazione.
Analyzing the IT section and its connected activities it is possible to observe that both Friuli Venezia Giulia and, peculiarly, the Municipalities of Tavagnacco and Udine have shown over the last ten years a strong quantitative and qualitative growth in companies operating in IT advice and installation services, in software development and IT advice, data processing and management of databases, maintenance of IT infrastructures and creation of web templates showing a technological vocation for internet service provision and in general Web Multimedia and ICT Technology (Information & Communication Technology).

From the demographic point of view The Digital Technology District area collects 111 thousand residents, with one of the highest densities in the region after Trieste.
In terms of industry the area hosts 10.070 companies, with a significant presence in the manufacturing sector particularly in Tavagnacco and Reana del Rojale. The production system of this territory consists of local agricultural units 4,3%, industries 9,7%, constructions 9,9%, trading and accommodation facilities 37,5%, and services for the remaining 38,6% (services to companies and services to citizens), which is therefore the modal value of local economy.

The three municipalities host about 394 active companies in the IT sector and related activities, almost half (45%) of all active companies in the province of Udine in the same sector and 21,7% of the ones operating in the Region. It can be estimated that about 2.000 operators are involved in the IT sector and connected activities. Local active units are 496, 47% being classified under the “Electronic data processing” division, thus certainly falling within the system operation sector, 37% of local units “Develops software“ and offers "IT advice services", 6% offers maintenance services (repair of office machines and IT devices) and the remaining 9,5% consists of other activities connected to IT (advice on the installation of IT systems), (activities of databases).
